Commuters are facing a morning of misery as a serious crash has forced the closure of a major dual-carriageway, causing lengthy delays.

In the early hours of the morning, emergency services raced to the scene on the A1 northbound near Claypole, Lincolnshire. The road remains shut between Barrowby, which is near Grantham, and Balderton, several miles north.

The affected stretch of the A1 is a vital commuter route for those working in Lincoln, around 30 miles away, and Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire. The closure is expected to cause significant disruption for these motorists.

A diversion has been put in place for affected commuters, but the detour through the fringes of Nottinghamshire will add considerable time to journeys this morning, with delays seeming unavoidable.

According to the Highways Agency, Lincolnshire Police and other emergency services are still at the scene of the crash, working to clear the road and investigate the incident.
