Today is the sixth anniversary of the UK leaving the European Union and 2026 is the 10th anniversary of the referendum. But are you happy with Brexit?

The UK, which joined the EU in January 1973, remains the only member state to have withdrawn.

The referendum was held in June 2016, when the electorate voted to Leave the EU by a slight margin, with a 51.9% share of the vote.

All regions of England and Wales except London voted in favour of Brexit, and Scotland and Northern Ireland voted to remain.

The UK officially left the European Union on January 31, 2020, after a withdrawal deal was passed by Parliament.

Following Brexit, EU law and the Court of Justice of the European Union no longer have primacy over British law but the UK remains bound by obligations in treaties it has with other countries around the world, including many with EU member states and with the EU itself.

The European Union (Withdrawal) Act 2018 retains relevant EU law as domestic law, which the UK can amend or repeal.

Since 2017, opinion polls have tended to show a plurality supporting remaining in the EU or the view that Brexit was a mistake.

This is thought to be caused by the millions of remain-leaning young people who were not yet eligible to vote in 2016, Leave voters have buyer’s remorse, and the death of older voters likely to vote Leave.
