When Brits think of a true pier experience often their first thought is the likes of Blackpool or Brighton as they overlook one of the UK's ultimate piers.

Although tucked away in the South West, along the Bristol Channel in North Somerset, is a seaside destination that offers a pier experience like no other.

Weston-super-Mare did not come to play when it decided to amp up its Grand Pier, maintaining its tradition all while taking things up a notch on the main stretch of beach.

Now it suits modern families in a way a holiday destination would hope to, with an indoor space full of thrills, fun and all the British seaside must-haves.

It first opened its doors as the Grand Pier in 1904 and has since become a listed building, protecting a legacy of seaside tourism in Weston.

Although, in this time, the pier has gone from a modest viewpoint to a full-blown business offering hours' worth of entertainment.

Unfortunately for holidaymakers and locals, during its lifetime, the pier has been destroyed twice by two fires, the first in 1930 and later on in 2008. It was the 2008 catastrophe which gave it an entirely new lease of life and welcomed the reconstruction of the pier as we know it today.

In 2009, North Somerset Council approved plans for a new pier to be built, and contractors John Sisk and Son were selected to create a new pavilion.

The new and improved Grand Pier opened for the half-term break on October 23 2010, with an official reopening for the tourist season the following July.

Now, while the pier still sells some traditional seaside rock, fish and chips and has a whole host of arcade games, including the classic 2p machines, it has so much to offer.

15 years later and it continues to wow families looking for a day of fun, with activities spanning two floors and remarkable views of the sea surrounding it.

Major attractions indoors include the house of horrors, glow-in-the-dark go-karts, mini golf, a free fall ride, along with a sidewinder ride, dodgems and so much more.

One person wrote about their experience on TripAdvisor, claiming: "We spent pretty much the whole day there and could easily go again the next day as we didn't do everything (didn't make it to soft play for the little ones) even though we did do the ghost train twice!

"Absolutely great day out at a beautiful venue. Wristbands are great value for money, and so much is included. 100% recommend - great destination. We will be back!"

Upon arrival, you can simply pay £2 at the door for entry per person or book your tickets in advance to avoid carrying loose change.

Their website has a range of offers that include unlimited ride access or entry fee and access to a number of rides for you and the family, making pre-booking easy and money-saving.

Although, like any pier, you can expect to spend some cash once you make your way along to the pavilion, with individual tenors charging individually for their games and attractions.

There's no need to leave and re-enter for food either, as your lunchtimes are covered with the Grand Pier's several cafes and dining options. From trusty fish and chips to sugary doughnuts, ice creams and more, the pier has everything a summer holiday or day by the sea would require.

A recent visitor shared: "Can clearly see a lot of thought and investment has gone into the grand pier. The couple of hours we spent there were enjoyable.

"There's something and everything for all ages. Even if it's just sitting out on a nice sunny day enjoying a nice drink. £2 entrance fee doesn't break the bank."

Weston-super-Mare is home to another pier, although there is not much fun to be had on it, as it remains derelict. Birnbeck Pier remains a piece of history and stands as a listed building, currently undergoing work so it can see the light of day again sometime in 2027.

While it initially opened to the public in 1867, the once beautiful pier has been closed since 1994. Weston hopes to see it take shape once again, adding even more life to the seaside town, as the only UK one connected to an island.
