Some of the world’s coolest lifts are located in luxury hotels, including the highest outdoor lift in Europe, in Switzerland. The Bürgenstock Resort is home to one of the most incredible lifts, the Hammetschwand, overlooking Lake Lucerne.

The Hammetschwand lift was built between 1900 and 1905 by hotel pioneer Franz Josef Bucher, and at the time it cost 500,000 Swiss francs (around £470,000). The lift is also the fastest way up to the viewpoint, ascending 153 meters (502 feet) in under a minute. Visitors should note that to reach the base of the lift, you have to walk the spectacular Felsenweg cliff path.

On Tripadvisor, a visitor said that it's important to pick "the perfect sunny day to enjoy the view." They added: "This is a fantastic view, the elevator is just too quick, but still worth a visit."

Another one said: "You do the Burgenstock track to the lift and it is already by itself stunning!!! Nobody talks about it. It's a hidden gem in Switzerland!

"Then you arrive at that special spit where the lakes of the four cantons connect, and it’s breathtaking. A bit ahead, there’s the lift and the adventure to one of the most beautiful views ever. It's easy, it's accessible, it’s unbelievably beautiful. I will do it again."

Other incredible lifts include the Hotel Santa Caterina’s lift, in Amalfi, Italy, that offers terrific views. Built into the rugged cliffside, the glass-fronted elevator takes guests down to the exclusive Beach Club and the Italian seafood restaurant.

The Corfu Holiday Palace, in Greece, features an incredible lift that takes guests down the cliffside to the beach in a matter of moments, offering beautiful views across the bay and much easier access to the white sands.

In the US, the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas has one of the world's most iconic lifts. As the hotel is shaped like a pyramid, the lifts travel from floor to floor at a diagonal 39-degree angle, providing guests with a spectacular view over the spacious atrium whilst travelling to one of the hotel’s 4,407 rooms.
