A startling incident at Disneyland has prompted concerns after a boy plummeted down a 50-foot drop on a well-known ride. The 13-year-old was aboard the water ride Tiana's Bayou Adventure on Sunday (June 21) when he exited mid-attraction.

It was during his ill-judged exit that the boy tumbled down the 50-foot drop. He sustained no life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital as a precautionary measure, it is understood.

Disneyland confirmed the boy had left the ride prematurely, and had been assessed at a medical facility near the California theme park. He was subsequently discharged.

The log flume attraction at the Anaheim park, which replaced the Splash Mountain ride and launched in November 2024, features neither seatbelts nor lap bars. Officials from the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health examined the attraction following the incident.

It received approval to reopen the next day. Following reports of the occurrence online, Disney enthusiasts flocked to social media to voice concerns about the absence of restraints on the ride.

One person, purporting to be an eyewitness, said on Reddit they "saw a kid fall down the hill". They added: "When we got off there were about six Disney police and a mother and two kids were with them all soaked."

A separate Disney visitor recounted hearing a woman scream, while their grandson "saw a kid tumbling down the water slide". A third individual, who claimed to know a member of staff at the California theme park, stated the boy had "slid backwards" down the 50-foot incline.

They revealed that, consequently, he "sustained a lot of cuts and scrapes". Fortunately, however, "luck was on his side" as it appeared "he didn't hit his head", they added.

Another park-goer disclosed they had viewed footage of the boy's fall after a bystander filmed the distressing incident.

"I didn't see it, but there was a guy there that filmed it, and we watched it on his phone," they said, adding "It was very disturbing."

The boy's Disneyland fall has since sparked conversations about ride safety, with many questioning the lack of seatbelts on the ride. One person said: "I'm surprised they haven't installed lap bars/seatbelts to prevent such a thing from happening in the first place. Almost every other ride has a safety restraint in place."

A second added: "When I loaded my four-year-old into the Tiana ride boat, I was panicked when it occurred to me that the boat didn't have restraints."

A third added: "It has always surprised me that lap bars have never been installed on this ride; especially, since it's a single-file ride and kids can't clutch their parents."

A fourth quipped: "Rapids rides have [seatbelts], so why not flumes?" A well-known Disney blogger even weighed in.

Inside the Magic, which has been run by Disney superfan Kurt Schmidt since 2005 and touts itself as the "world's largest website for fans of Disney World, Disneyland, Marvel, and Star Wars", called the incident a "serious" one.

"This is serious. It raises immediate questions about how a guest ended up outside a ride vehicle at one of the most dangerous points on an attraction," a post on Inside the Magic reads. The absence of seatbelts or lap bars is standard practice on log flume rides across the globe.

Such attractions rely on a low centre of gravity and the shape of the flume itself, which is engineered to keep riders securely in position.

Restraints are typically left off in the unlikely event that a 'log' boat overturns, as seatbelts or lap bars could then pose a serious drowning risk.

The boy is not the first individual to have clambered out of the log carriage on the Tiana's Bayou Adventure ride.

A video went viral on TikTok last year that showed a man getting out of the log flume mid-ride at Disney World to retrieve his hat, which had blown off during the same drop the boy fell down.

Just months earlier, another clip circulated online depicting a man and his son "jumping out of the log", with witnesses claiming at the time that the ride had broken down. The man, having grown impatient after 10 minutes stranded on the ride, became frustrated and attempted to locate an exit.

Unable to find one, he then refused to re-board for 30 minutes before he and his family were ultimately "escorted out", eyewitnesses recounted at the time.

In both instances, those who disembarked the ride prematurely escaped without sustaining any injuries.
