Nicola on beach

It's been so hot here in the UK this week that I went to the beach on three seperate occasions in seven days, and I don't even live that near one. However, an hour or so in the car is nothing when there's an amazing day or evening out at the beach ahead of you.

I know the nice weather sadly won't last, hence my determination to spend as much time outside as possible. Out of my various coastal visits, there's one spot that really stood out for one key reason — the food. Troon, which is around 45 minutes from my hometown of Glasgow, was the perfect place to spend a warm evening as the heatwave came to an end.

It's been just over six months since my last visit to Troon, which was on a freezing cold and snowy January day. This week's trip couldn't have been any more different. After work one evening, we jumped in the car and headed down to the coastal town that overlooks the Firth of Clyde, with one key goal in mind.

Even though the best of the heatwave in Scotland came to an abrupt end during the day with a biblical thunderstorm, the sun managed to come out once again as we walked along the shore. Probably because of the weather earlier in the day, it was nice and quiet, with just a few people milling about on the sand.

While it was nice to be able to walk on the beach without the freezing wind whipping us about like last time, the stroll was pretty short-lived, because it was time to head up to the harbour to grab some food.

Finally, we got to visit The Wee Hurrie for dinner. The Scottish fishing fleet had been tied up back in January so it hadn't been open, which although was our own fault for not checking, still put a major dampener on the day — especially given the icy cold weather.

This award-winning chippy is known for its fresh seafood and unique location right on the harbour. And it was 100% worth the hype, being one of the best dinners I've ever had.

The scampi was so unbelievably fresh, coated in a light batter that didn't make me feel bloated or gross afterwards, which is a real rarity for a chippy. It was actually quite hard to choose just one meal, since the menu is so varied and unique. Where else would you find fritto misto, noodles and lobster all on the one menu?

It was served with some delicious tartare sauce and a lemon wedge, as well as plenty of salt and vinegar. Despite being light and crisp, it was also very filling and satisfying, and you can't beat the portion sizes either. It cost £14.30, and it was worth every single penny — I genuinely can't stop thinking about it.

It's a takeaway so you can't sit in, but loads of people were queuing up to order before taking it home in their cars. We ate standing up outside the shack, which I think says everything about how tasty it was.

Troon

The food might have been our main reason for visiting Troon that night, but as the weather was still nice and warm even after we'd finished eating, a walk down the high street was on the cards.

It was around 7pm at this point so a lot of the small independent shops and cafes had closed their doors, but the pubs looked sufficiently busy, and there were people heading in and out of takeaways, restaurants, shops or just simply walking around like we were.

If I hadn't had the car, I would have definitely popped into Lido on the high street for a drink or two, but it sadly didn't happen this time.

It was a slightly shorter visit than last time but so much better thanks to the delicious food and the gorgeous evening sun. If you're nearby and have a few hours to kill, or if you're coming from further afield, Troon is a fantastic place to explore.
