A mother has spoken out after her daughter was raped by teenage boys, who were convicted of the crime but have not been sent to prison. Two teenage girls saw their attackers, aged 13, 14 and 14 at the time of the offences, issued with youth rehabilitation orders. They were convicted of a knife-point rape and other serious sexual offences against two girls in Hampshire.

During a five-week trial at Southampton Crown Court, jurors heard that the victims, aged 14 and 15 at the time, were attacked in separate incidents less than two months apart and were physically overpowered, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said. The girls did not know one another. The names of the victims, the attackers and their families cannot be reported for legal reasons.

The mother of one of the girls told the BBC's Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg this morning: "I just can't explain as a mother, how it feels to know that the people sitting in the same courtroom as you have raped your child.

"Nobody else can understand that."

"This needs to be reviewed. This needs to be relooked at. This needs to be given justice. This needs to be given a custodial sentence. It has to be.

"We need to remember, this was not a couple of drunken teenagers at a party having a fumble. This was pre-meditated. It was thought about. It was planned, and it's not just a once off occasion.

"This is more than once. This was twice. They've been convicted twice of the same thing. How are they still walking around?"

The mother's partner told the Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer: "Sort it out. Sort it out so that boys, girls, women, men are getting justice for crimes against them."

The mother added: "Please help. If it was your daughter, your niece, your son, your nephew, your family member, would you be happy? Because we're not happy, and I don't think any other member of the public will be happy, too."

The girl said: "What was the point of putting me through that, just to say it's fine?"

She added: "I just wanted to die... I wanted justice. I wanted to prove my point. But it feels like nothing was proven."

"Boy A", from Hampshire, who was convicted of two counts of rape and count of taking indecent images of a child, was sentenced to a three-year youth rehabilitation order.

"Boy B", from Dorset, who was convicted of six counts of rape, was sentenced to a three-year youth rehabilitation order.

"Boy C", from Hampshire, who was convicted of two counts of rape, was sentenced to an 18-month youth rehabilitation order.

The attorney general, Lord Hermer, is set to review the sentences. Visibly emotional, the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Darren Jones, said he did not want to prejudge the Lord Hermer, but added that the girls "deserve justice", and "the boys need to know that they can't behave in that way and get away with it".

Each youth rehabilitation order sentence includes different requirements, and there is no minimum period for them, but they can last up to three years.

A variety of of requirements can be included, inclusing supervision and electronic monitoring, a curfew and unpaid work.
