An EasyJet flight heading for London had to divert for an emergency landing in Rome. The pilot told passengers there was something in the luggage hold that should not have been there and posed a major fire risk.

Reports claim that a passenger kept their phone charging in their checked luggage using a power bank. It is claimed that a woman told a flight attendant about the whereabouts of her power bank, and the flight with 180 passengers was then diverted due to the risk of a fire.

The emergency landing took place at 11.30pm on Saturday, May 23. Passengers were reportedly given hotel rooms, with some choosing to sleep in the airport terminals, as the next EasyJet flight back to the UK was not available until 2pm the following day (May 24).

On EasyJet's website, it explains the rules about lithium batteries, including what is "prohibited". It states: "Power banks are accepted on EasyJet aircraft with a Wh rating not exceeding 160Wh for lithium batteries. Power banks are prohibited from use on EasyJet aircraft and must not be used to charge other devices.

"Power banks must be carried in carry-on baggage only. It is recommended that power banks be carried where they can be monitored (i.e. on your person)."

These power bank rule applies to almost all major airlines, including Ryanair, Jet2, TUI and British Airways. People should check their individual airlines for any specific rules and requirements regarding travelling with a power bank.

Why are power banks such a risk?

Power banks are prohibited from use or storage in certain areas on flights because they contain lithium-ion batteries. These batteries are highly flammable and can experience "thermal runaway," a chain reaction that can cause them to overheat or catch fire.

Although they are not entirely 'banned', power banks must be kept in carry-on bags and not used during the flight. This is because, if a battery overheats, cabin crew members can easily access, spot, and extinguish the fire.

Charging devices through them generates excess heat, which increases the risk of fire. Some airlines have rules that power banks cannot be hidden in overhead bins and must be kept in plain sight (such as the seatback pocket or under the seat in front of you) so that passengers and crew can be instantly aware if smoke or fire occurs.

Your rights if flight is forced to make an emergency landing

If your flight makes an emergency landing or diversion, your right to compensation, a refund, or rebooking depends entirely on the cause of the emergency. You are legally guaranteed certain help during the delay, regardless of the reason for the diversion.

Regardless of whether the emergency was caused by an airline issue or an unforeseeable event, the airline is legally obligated to look after you while you wait. This includes vouchers or reimbursement for reasonable food and drink, hotel accommodation and transport (if delayed overnight).

If your flight is significantly delayed or the journey is ultimately cancelled, you are entitled to choose between alternative travel under comparable conditions as soon as possible or a refund. Check individual rights to refunds with your chosen airline.
