Prince Harry is still hoping to bring Meghan Markle and their children to the UK next week despite an apparent setback over the family's security arrangements, according to a report.
The Duke of Sussex is due to visit Britain on July 7 in support of the Invictus Games Birmingham 2027, and a spokesperson said he is exploring "every available option" to make the trip with the Duchess of Sussex, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
However, Vanity Fair reported that Harry has been left reconsidering those plans after being informed that the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (RAVEC) would not provide full-time police protection throughout the visit.
RAVEC decides taxpayer-funded protective security on a case-by-case basis, with full-time police protection generally reserved for working members of the Royal Family. A Home Office spokesman is reported to have said its position on Harry's security arrangements had not changed.
According to the magazine, King Charles has offered the Sussexes accommodation at a royal residence, believed to be Buckingham Palace, where they would have security while staying there. However, because the family had planned to travel to engagements in different parts of the country, they would not receive continuous police protection while away from the residence.
The report said Harry had hoped security arrangements would be strengthened for the visit because he intended to travel with Meghan and their children.
Citing an unnamed source, Vanity Fair reported the Duke was "devastated and close to tears" after learning that full-time police protection would not be provided.
The source said: "He had assumed that because he was bringing the kids, and the king had made a royal residence available to them, he would get what he has been pushing for all along, full-time police protection. That has not been the case.
"The king has made it clear that while he wants to see his estranged son and grandchildren, he will not intervene in security matters."
According to the report, Harry remains disappointed by the decision and believes his family requires greater protection while travelling in the UK.
The magazine also reported that, following Harry's legal challenges over his security arrangements, RAVEC began a fresh risk assessment late last year, although that review has yet to conclude.
The Duke's planned visit is expected to include engagements with the Invictus Games Foundation at Chatham House in London, as well as the Royal Hospital Chelsea.
Harry no longer has an official UK residence, but it has been widely reported that the King's offer of accommodation remains open. It is understood the Duke has yet to respond.
